The first of three sessions for Del Mar College’s Youth Aquatics swimming lessons for elementary and middle school students is from June 10-20, Monday through Thursday.
Session 2 begins June 24.
Individuals have a choice of three lesson times––8 a.m., 8:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m.–– for eight 30-minute lessons in the Aquatic Center in the Kinesiology Complex on Baldwin Blvd on Del Mar College’s East Campus.
Youth must be age five by December 31, 2012, to qualify for the program (no exceptions). Organizers recommend that students be at least 48 inches in height. Students will be assigned to an instructor according to skill level: beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmer.
Parents/guardians are required to present a birth certificate and Social Security card at time of registration.

Del Mar College’s Public Service Academy will provide active learning for 8th through 12th grade students interested in emergency medical services, fire science and criminal justice, including some CSI or crime scene investigation work, as part of a three-week camp that will culminate with students collectively responding to a mock emergency situation.
Participation is limited to 80 students with individuals being physically fit and not claustrophobic in order to participate in planned field activities that include rappelling, smoke house and confined space exercises.
The Public Service Academy runs from June 10-27, Monday through Thursday, 1-5 p.m.
Cost is $150 with a June 1 deadline. Scholarships are available.

As Del Mar College’s youngest students, Kids Camp participants can explore algebra, take sign language or conversational Spanish, work on desktop publishing or PowerPoint presentations or stir their creative juices through basic drawing and music classes, among many other topics.
Session 2 begins June 17.
Students’ Social Security Numbers are required for registration, along with this year’s report card.

Del Mar College’s Mexican American Studies faculty collaboration presents Dr. José Angel Gutiérrez, professor of political science at the University of Texas at Arlington and founder and former director of the institution’s Center for Mexican American Studies.
The Crystal City, Texas, native is known as a founding member of the La Raza Unida party of the 1970s. An international speaker, lawyer and author, Dr. Gutiérrez’s publications include The Making of A Chicano Militant: Lessons from Cristal (Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1998) and the co-authored work, Chicanas in Charge: Texas Women in the Public Arena (Walnut Creek, CA: Altamira Press, 2007), with Michele Melendez and Corpus Christi native Sonia Noyola.
Among television appearances the professor has made are MSNBC’s Scarborough Country with Bill Scarborough, Fox News’ The Pulse with Bill O’Reilly, The Jerry Springer Show and two PBS’ feature specials, CHICANO! The Mexican American Struggle for Civil Rights, Part III, and In Search of Aztlan.
Dr. Gutiérrez’s guest lecture will cover the “Chicano Movement in Texas and the Importance of Mexican American Studies Across the United States.” His lecture is open to the public.
